COLDSee also Cough/ Sore throat Notes- Colds usually consist of a variety of symptoms but nearly always include a
runny or obstructed nose.
- They are usually viral self limiting illnesses, but appropriate therapy can
be provided to minimise symptoms.
Danger signs- Colds associated with very high temperature, severe pain or shortness of
breath. Contact GP.
Notes for children- If associated with high peaks of temperature >40'c (104'F) or signs of
secondary infection; sticky eye, ear pain, difficulty swallowing, shortness of
breath. Contact GP.
Notes for the elderly- Beware of increased risk of side effects.
- Sympathomimeties may increase heart rate, raise BP, and in overdose
cardiovascular compromise.
General advice- Therapy appropriate to symptoms.
- Vitamin C is harmless and many claim benefit from it.
- Rest.
- Fluids.
Therapy- Analgesics.
- Antipyretics
- Oral or topical sympathomimetics (short term use only) decongestants
- Antihistamines. (Care - can cause drowsiness).
