Evaluate motivation: - Pre-contemplative phase. Does this patient really want to stop
smoking? If not - help them in a way which makes it likely they will move to
seriously contemplate stopping.
- Contemplative phase. They are seriously considering stopping -
explore their health beliefs - help to coincide with them. Accept several
attempts may be needed.
- Made up their mind to stop. They have decided what help they need to
stop - provide it as far as possible.
Danger signs- Pregnancy contra-indications in use of nicotine replacement.
- Smoking "cessation" aid addicts. Some may smoke and use patches/
gum.
Notes for children- Nicotine replacement contraindicated below age 18, but note that most
smokers in this country start before age 11!
General advice- Advice backed by a leaflet increases effectiveness
- Leave "door open" for smoker to return. Most need 8 attempts to
stop.
- Passive effects on children ma motivate adults to stop.
Therapy- Nicotine support - chewing gum
- Non-nicotine support course
