THRUSH/FUNGAL INFECTIONSee alsoUrine infection Types- Genital area. Red some rash and white thick discharge.
- Ring Worm. As the fungus grows outward from a central spot it forms
a ring on the skin.
- Intertrigo. Moist areas - axillae/natal cleft/between toes (Athlete
Foot) - have red itch rash.
- Mouth. White sticky plaques giving some throat/ dysphagia or
interfering with feeding.
Danger signs- Immuncompromised patients may be more vulnerable eg. Diabetes/steroids.
- Genital infections may coexist with venereal disease. Visit GU
Clinic if no response.
Notes for children- Infants often have white "sucking pads" - if discharge or poor
feeding suspect oral thrush.
- Steroid inhalers may give rise to oral/ throat dysphonia/oesophageal
candida. Use inhalers twice a day - clean teeth after use.
General advice- Avoid excessive hygiene, ie. overuse of soaps/bubble bath/excessive baths.
- As much ventilation as possible.
Therapy- Antifungal creams.
- Antifungal dusting powders for feet and shoes.
- Hydrocortisone cream combined with antifungal may hasten symptom relief.
- Anti-histamines for relief itch.
