Common problems
Symptom groups:

  • Dysuria:Burning pain on passing urine.
  • Increased frequency: More frequent passing urine.
  • Haematuria: Blood in urine.

Danger signs

  • Diabetes. May present with polyuria/nocturia or increase in frequency. Often, but not always, has associated weight loss and thirst. May present as UTI or with abdominal pain. If in doubt, Contact GP.
  • Dysuria with urethal discharge. Consider venereal disease. Contact GU clinic.

Notes for children

  • Young females may present with dysuria, when commencing sexual activity. They may need contraceptive advice. Advise barrier method. Visit GP or Family Planning Clinic. Pregnancy may present with increase in frequency. If a possibility, pregnancy test and Contact GP, midwife or clinic.

Notes for the elderly

  • Senile vaginitis - may present with increase in frequency.

General advice

  • Increase fluid intake.
  • If medical advice is sought take sample of urine.
  • Avoid excess bathing/washing.

Therapy

  • Alkalising agents eg. Mist Pot Cit.

Dictionary

Dysuria: difficulty or pain in urination.
Haematuria: any condition in which the urine contains blood or red blood cells.
Vaginitis: inflammation of the vagina.
