ACTION ON PRE-ECLAMPSIA (APEC)

Action on Pre-eclampsia (APEC) was set up in 1991 by a group of parents and professionals with first-hand experience of pre-eclampsia, and gained charitable status in 1992. Its aims are:

  1. To educate, inform and advise the public and health professionals about the prevalence, nature and risks of pre-eclampsia;
  2. To campaign for greater public awareness of the disease and for action to improve methods of detection and treatment;
  3. To provide support for people who suffer or have suffered pre-eclampsia, and their families;
  4. To promote research into the causes of the disease and appropriate screening techniques and treatment methods.

To these ends, APEC:

  • Publishes newsletters, information leaflets and waiting-room posters;
  • Runs a 24-hourtelephone Helpline for sufferers (see below);
  • Operates a network of local support groups;
  • Organises conferences, study days and workshops for parents and health professionals.

How you can help ....

In the short term, APEC wants to ensure that every parent-to-be appreciates the risks of pre-eclampsia and the need for antenatal screening; that every doctor and midwife understands how to diagnose and manage the condition; and that every sufferer gets the support and information they so badly need. In the longer term, APEC aims to co-ordinate a national research campaign to establish the cause of pre-eclampsia and to devise methods of predicting, treating and ultimately preventing the disease. You can help in the following ways:
DONATION All donations, however small, are warmly welcomed and, cumulatively, can make a huge impact on our ability to provide a service. To make a straight donation by cheque or postal order, fill in the relevant part of the form overleaf.

GIFTAID Larger donations can be made to work harder for APEC thanks to Government tax concessions. If you are able to contemplate a donation of £250 or more, please tick the relevant box on the form overleaf and we will send you a simple form which will enable us to reclaim an additional amount, equivalent to the rate of tax you pay.

DONATION BY COVENANT A Deed of Covenant is an agreement to give away part of your income every year. As long a the covenant runs for at least four years, the charity can increase the value of your gift by claiming back an extra 25 per cent from the Inland Revenue.

PAYROLL GIVING If you are a PAYE taxpayer, working for a company which already has the facility for payroll giving - or could be persuaded to set it up - you can make regular tax-efficient payments to APEC each time you receive a pay slip. Contact your accounts or wages department to find out whether a payroll giving facility exists.

LEGACIES By leaving a legacy to APEC, you can make a lasting contribution to the fight against pre-eclampsia and help safeguard future generations of mothers and babies.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS Sponsored events (marathons etc) and other fundraising functions, from Tupperware parties to car boot sales, can make a major contributio to a chahty's work. We will offer advice and practical help if possible.
