 | THE ARTHRITIS RESEARCH CAMPAIGN |
Arthritis is the most common cause of long-standing illness in the UK. It
affects eight million people and accounts for one-fifth of all visits to the
doctor. The Arthritis Research Campaign exists to try and eradicate this cruel
and painful condition. In the last year we funded almost £23 million of
research, and made some significant advances, most notably in the development
of new drugs We rely entirely upon public generosity to maintain our programme
of research. Who we areThe Arthritis Research Campaign is the fifth biggest medical research
charity in the UK, and the only charity in the country dedicated to finding the
cause of and cure for arthritis. Completely independent, and with no financial
input from either the government or pharmaceutical companies, in the past year
79p in every pound went towards research. Proposals for research funds from the ARC are rigorously examined - in 1998,
out of 361 grants applied for, only 117 were granted - just 32%. Successful
grant applications, currently around 380 in total, are regularly monitored.
Much of the pioneering research has resulted in the production of a variety of
booklets and leaflets available to the public, to help them understand and cope
better with rheumatic disease. The Arthritis Research Campaign funds medical research through hospitals,
universities and medical schools to investigate the cause and cure of arthritis
and rheumatism. We also produce a comprehensive range of free information
booklets covering over 60 different subjects concerning particular types of
arthritis and associated rheumatic diseases. These are available directly from
this web site, doctors' surgeries, hospitals or in response to requests from
the general public. How we are organisedThe Arthritis Research Campaign is a national charity with its headquarters
in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Staff are responsible for marketing and
fundraising, special appeals, supporting local community fundraising, accounts
and computer services, and administration of the research and education
programme. Community fundraising is organised by a team of Regional Fundraisers
and a network of branches. Scientific policies and the awarding of grants are
the responsibility of a series of related medical committees whose members
include consultant rheumatologists and leading research scientists from a wide
range of fields. A Board of Trustees provides overall direction for the charity.
