The National Autistic Society was established by parents in 1962 to
encourage a better understanding of autism, and to pioneer a range of
appropriate services for people with autism and those who care for them. Aims- To offer families and carers information, advice and support.
- To improve awareness amongst key decision-makers, professionals and the
general public.
- To provide training and promote research into autism.
- To develop a range of educational and support services for people with
autism.
Today the NAS and its affiliated network run more than 50 schools and
centres around the country offering specialist education, training and care for
both children and adults. The Society also supports local authorities in the
development of their own specialist services. The NAS also: - runs a confidential advice line for parents and professionals
- publishes a range of books and leaflets
- organises conferences and short courses
- supports one of the UK's leading diagnostic centres
- encourages research into the causes and treatment of autism
- supports local groups and families around the country.
