BRITISH ASSOCIATION FOR
SEXUAL AND MARITAL THERAPY (BASMT)History During 1974, when sex therapy was developing in the UK, an invited
Co-Therapists' Conference began meeting quarterly at the National Marriage
Council in Rugby. With increasing interest and membership from many
disciplines, a more formal structure was required so, in 1976, the Association
of Sexual and Marital Therapists was formed. In 1991 it became the British
Association of Sexual and Marital Therapy, and in March 1992 became a
Registered Charity. Aims The association aims to: - advance the education and training of persons who are engaged in sexual,
marital, and relationship therapy
- promote research into the fields of marriage and other intimate
relationships; sexual, marital and relationship therapy; and human sexuality
- advance the education of the public about sexual, marital, and relationship
therapy.
Activities National conferences are held each January and May, with regional
conferences in September. Conference themes cover all aspects of therapy, research, training, and
supervision on topics related to sexuality and relationships. The association produces "Sexual and Marital Therapy', a learned
international journal. Members automatically receive the journal and the
bulletin, which covers BASMT activities and future events. The association provides information services for the public about local
availability of sexual, marital, and relationship therapy. The association accredits suitable training courses in sexual, marital, and
relationship therapy. MembershipThe executive of BASMT may grant general membership of BASMT to those who: - are from relevant professions and support the objects of the association as
laid down in Article 2 of the Fourth Constitution
- agree to abide by the BASMT Code of Ethics and Practice and other
Governing Documents
In addition, applicants should be in practice as a sexual, marital, and
relationship therapist, but: - do not wish to become an accredited member
- do not fulfil the criteria for accredited membership
or: - be currently in training as a sexual, marital, and relationship therapist
- be involved in academic research related to sexual and relationship
therapy, or have a medical or clinical interest in sexual and relationship
therapy
General members who fulfil the criteria required by the executive are
eligible to become accredited members. Accredited members have voting rights at
Annual General Meetings. Accredited membership is a qualification. Fellowship is an honorary status and is awarded by the passing of a
resolution proposed by the executive at an Annual General Meeting. It confers
membership rights, including the right to vote, without payment of a
subscription. Joint membership is for pairs of members who are living at the same address,
within the same category, who are prepared to share one set of documents and
circulars of the association. Mailing list Members of other professional organisations and the public who wish to be
kept informed about the activities of the association may apply to be put on a
mailing list. They are not members of the association and are not entitled to
any of the advantages of membership. Applications Applications for general membership should be forwarded to The Honorary
Secretary to be received not later than 1st March, 1st July, and 1st November in any
year. Applications for membership will only be considered three times a year at
the January, May, and September membership committee meetings. Any application which is incomplete (e.g. non receipt of reference) two
weeks before the committee meeting will not be considered, and will be deferred
until the next meeting. Confirmation of the outcome of the application is sent
to the candidate within four weeks of the membership committee meeting.
Membership of BASMT does not commence until the annual subscription as been
received by the honorary treasurer. To obtain an information pack, including application forms, write to the
honorary secretary at the address above. Please enclose a cheque for £5.00
to cover administration costs.
