THE BEETHOVEN FUND FOR
DEAF CHILDRENThe Beethoven Fund for Deaf Children is the only charity uniquely devoted to
providing musical speech therapy to the hundreds of schools for the deaf and
partial-hearing units all over the UK. Special musical instruments are provided
by the Fund and their vibrations help hearing- impaired children to reproduce
the rhythm and melody of speech and language, and so develop their powers of
communication. Music and spoken language offer so many points of resemblance that the basic
elements of music can be employed as a means of teaching the hearing-impaired
and other handicapped groups to use their voices in a more normal and
acceptable way and thus improve their communication with the hearing world. The instruments are specially designed and are costly. The Beethoven Fund
provides them to all schools for the deaf who wish to develop this
comparatively new therapy. In addition, the Fund organises workshops for
teachers where they are trained in the most up-to-date methods now being used
in other countries. Internationally-known therapists are flown in and our own teachers of the
deaf attend these extremely informative and stimulating workshops. A special
video film has also been made by the Fund, and is sent - free of charge - to
all schools to enable the teachers to obtain the finest results from the
instruments donated by the Fund.
