BOBATH CENTRE FOR
CHILDREN WITH CEREBRAL PALSYThe aim of the Bobath approach is, through specialised techniques of
handling, to give children with cerebral palsy the experience of a greater
variety of co-ordinated movement patterns. The Bobath Centre offers the
following services: - Treatment of children in accordance with Bobath principles.
- Assessment and consultancy service - especially for children living at a
distance from London.
- Training of graduate therapists in the principles and practice of Bobath
treatment to promote its wider use.
- Research in conjuntion with University College London and the Royal Free
Hospital School of Medicine into the nature of cerebral palsy and ways of
mitigating its effects.
Each child's problems are individually assessed by an inter-disciplinary
team who develop a treatment plan. Continual reassessment ensures that
treatment meets the child's changing needs. Parental involvement is vital for
effective carry-over of treatment into everyday life. Good communications
between therapists, children and their carers ensures identification of common
goals. Treatment may be offered on a regular basis to children who live within easy
reach of the Centre. Daily therapy is available on a short-term basis to those
children who live further away. In addition, therapists may bring the children
they treat to the Centre for consultation and advice. Children must be referred
by their GP or consultant paediatrician. Details of fees are available on
request.
