BRAIN INJURY
REHABILITATION TRUSTThe Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT) provides rehabilitation,
residential services and community based outreach services for adults with
acquired brain injury. BIRT is a division of the Disabilities Trust (formerly
the Disabled Housing Trust) which was formed to ensure that people with serious
disabilities should not have to live in unsuitable institutions or nursing
homes. BIRT aims to provide the following. - A highly cost-effective route for rehabilitation and care.
- High standards of quality.
- Continuous monitoring and evaluation, fed back to service purchasers.
- Relevant, community-based skills for future self-reliance.
The services are designed for people who are considered appropriate for a
social reintegration programme. Any person with an acquired brain injury: head
injury, stroke, encephalitis, tumour, hypoxia or missile will be considered.
Referrals are welcome from Health Authority or Social Services staff,
solicitors, and family members. The BIRT programme begins when a person leaves hospital. Specialist
experience and skills mean that a structured environment is provided - offering
training in mobility, functional skills, cognitive strategies and social skills
- that is essential to promote a brain-injured person's capacity for social
independence.
