 | THE BRITISH DEAF ASSOCIATION |
The BDA is the national charity organisation representing about 70,000 Deaf
people in the UK; it is the leading edge of the Deaf movement. The BDA currently has approximately 6,500 members. The membership consists
mainly of Deaf people. There are 12 Area Councils and over 175 local branches
all over the UK. The BDA is a democratic Association with an Executive Council
made up of elected representatives from every region of the UK: it is the only
organisation in the UK to represent Deaf people in this way. The BDA is a member of the European Union of Deaf People. It also belongs to
the World Federation for the Deaf, an international organisation affiliated to
the United Nations. There is co-operation between the BDA and other organisations associated
with deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind and disabled people to campaign and work
together for full and equal citizenship. The Main Office is based in London, with other offices in Crewe, Glasgow and
Cardiff. There are roughly 50 staff employed by the BDA nationwide, many of
whom are Deaf, including the Chief Executive. The British Deaf Association is a registered charity and depends on
financial support from individuals and organisations.
