 | BRITISH SOCIETY FOR ALLERGY AND CLINICAL IMMUNOLOGY |
For many years the BSACI has been a major focus for clinicians and
scientists in the UK and overseas and last year it celebrated its 50th
anniversary. Its origins lie in the Asthma Research Club which had been founded by a
group of enthusiastic immunologists and clinicians, but in 1948 they formed the
British Association of Allergists which in 1962 became the British Allergy
Society. Interest in allergy grew steadily under the careful guidance of such
distinguished members as William Frankland, Jack Pepys and Sir Cyril Clarke and
a need was perceived for widening the scope to include clinical immunology. In 1973 the Society was renamed The British Society for Allergy and Clinical
Immunology. During recent years there has been a rapid increase of interest in
immunological mechanisms in allergic disease and with this in mind efforts have
continued to increase the basic science and clinical output of the Society.
This has led to an upsurge of interest in allergy as a branch of clinical
immunology and the recognition that the discipline embraces many
sub-specialities in medicine. The specific aims of the Society are:- to advance and encourage the study of allergy and clinical immunology;
- having achieved the recognition of allergy and clinical immunology as
specialised branches of medicine, to work towards the increase in numbers of
allergists and clinical immunologists in the United Kingdom;
- to encourage the publication of original contributions to the study of
allergy and clinical immunology.
