BRITISH SOCIETY FOR RHEUMATOLOGYThe British Society for Rheumatology is the UK professional organisation for
people working in rheumatology and related fields. The principal objective of
the BSR is to advance the science and practice of rheumatology and to promote
study and research through scientific meetings and education courses. We hold a 4 day scientific meeting each year with around 1200 delegates. The
meetings feature education updates, clinical case reports, themed poster
discussions and special interest group meetings in addition to the Heberden
Oration and Heberden Round. Meetings are open to Members and non-members. We organise a number of smaller education courses on different aspects of
the specialty, open to Members and non-members. We also award a number of prizes for outstanding work, usually on the basis
of a submitted essay. The Society's Journal, Rheumatology (formerly the British Journal of
Rheumatology) is edited by Professor David L Scott from the Societys
offices in Holborn, London. Rheumatology has an impact factor of 2.309, ranking
it in the Top 5 international rheumatology journals. BSR also produces a range of publications on clinical, service provision
and guild issues. Many of these have been posted to our web site. The Society maintains an extensive library of both antique and modern books.
Antique and historic books and memorabilia are held at the Heberden Library at
the Royal College of Physicians, London; modern books and journals are held in
the Library at the Societys Headquarters in Holborn, London. Click here
to link to the Heberden Library (LINK) on-line catalogue. In addition to the Executive and Council, the BSR runs three Standing
Committees: Clinical Affairs Committee, Heberden Committee and Research &
Training Committee. The Society also encourages its members to set up Special
Interest Groups. BSR currently has around 1400 members in the UK and overseas; these include
consultant and trainee rheumatologists, health professionals, primary care
workers and orthopaedic surgeons. Membership is open to all scientific and
professional workers with an interest in clinical practice and research in the
field of the rheumatic diseases. The Society was formed in 1984 by the amalgamation of two earlier
organisations representing different aspects of rheumatology: the Heberden
Society and the British Association of Rheumatology and Rehabilitation. In 1998
the Society became a company limited by guarantee with charitable status. Registered Charity No. 1067124
