 | COUNCIL FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COMMUNICATION WITH DEAF PEOPLE (CACDP) |
The Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People aims to
improve communication between deaf and hearing people by the development of
curricula and examinations in communication skills. CACDP is the only national
board in the area of communicating with deaf people. It does not advocate one
method of communication over another but seeks to meet the communication needs
of hearing impaired and deaf people in the UK. It offers certification in
British Sign Language, Lipspeaking, Communication and Guiding Skills with
Deafblind People, Deaf Awareness and Deafblind Awareness. It also carries out
the selection, training, monitoring and registration of examiners. Those who
have taken courses include those with deaf friends, relatives or colleagues as
well as professionals. CACDP administers a register of qualified and trainee interpreters and
publishes annually a national directory of sign language interpreters,
lipspeakers, interpreters for deafblind people and speech to text reporters who
are not only of a required standard but are also available to undertake
interpreting assignments. CACDP produces a range of publications and training
videos on sign language, lipspeaking, finger spelling, deafblindness,
note-taking and deaf awareness. Further details of the courses and publications
are available from address below.
