CHILD DEATH HELPLINEIn October 1995 the experience and tradition of the Alder Centre and Great
Ormond Street were brought together in the setting up of the national Child
Death Helpline. The Helpline provides a confidential, nation-wide service for
anyone affected by the death of a child of any age, at any time, under any
circumstances. Services offered include the following. - A listening service to provide emotional support for families who have
suffered the loss of a child.
- Telephone Helpline operates confidentially and the caller may remain
anonymous.
- Opportunity to talk to people sympathetic to the caller's situation. The
Child Death Helpline is staffed by bereaved parents. They are not bereavement
counsellors, but have undergone a training course to prepare them to listen, to
befriend and to support anyone affected by the death of a child. They receive
professional backup and supervision.
- Support and befriending are given to anyone affected by the death of a
child, including parents, other relatives, friends and professionals.
- Information leaflets.
