CHILDREN'S HEART FEDERATIONOne out of every 100 children born suffers from a heart disorder but the
different kinds of disorder are rare enough for their families to often feel
very alone. The Children's Heart Federation brings together groups across
Britain and Ireland so that they can share problems, ideas, approaches and
educational materials designed to help heart children. The CHF comprises:
regional groups of families with heart children; support groups organised
around hospitals with Paediatric Cardiology Units; national groups for children
with particular conditions. Parents feeling in need of someone to talk to can
call the federation who can put them in touch with parents in their region who
know what it is like to have a child in the family diagnosed with a similar
condition. The CHF provides a range of information including material produced by the
British Heart Foundation and other groups about all aspects of bringing up
heart children, from coping with siblings, employers and hospitals to
explaining the most common heart conditions and relevant treatments, to short
leaflets about looking after children's teeth. Activities of the chf include
the following. - Running a national Helpline for both families and professionals involved
with heart children.
- Organising conferences and special holidays for heart children and events
for families.
- Educating teachers, health professionals and others about the special needs
of heart children.
- Producing a newsletter, Update, which gives Chf news, news from local
groups, details of other self-help groups and medical / hospital information.
