BRITISH COLOSTOMY ASSOCIATION

British Colostomy Association (BCA) is the national registered charity which represents the interests of people with a colostomy and which provides support, reassurance and practical in formation to anyone who is about to have a colostomy, or who already has a colostomy.

It is a unique service which is provided by BCA, as only people who have a colostomy and have the necessary experience and skilis to inspire and help others are enlisted to assist in our work. They do not counsel but have the training and ability to give practical support and encourage ment and give only non-medical information.

It is the added benefit of being able to speak to someone who is expert in living with a colos tomywhich providesyou withthe livingproofthat it is possible to return to a full and active life.

A Phone and Letter Helpline is an important part of the BCA service and a helpful range of advisory literature is also readily available on request.

Membership is by simply registering on our strictly confidential register and no subscription or fees are involved. Registration is notobi igatory, but it ensures that you are not forgotten, and that you receive newsletters and regular up to date informa tion. By registering you are also helping to main tain the strength of your National Association.

How we are organised

There is a small Headquarters Staff responsible for the administration of the Association and from where the main help line services operate.

Covering the country are a number of experienced Area Organiserswho maintain contactwith their local communities and who are available to give first hand help. They in turn organise Volun teers to assist them, most of whom are either recommended or are recruited by the Stoma Care Nurse, and the Area Organisers are available to assist with training 3nd maintain contact with Head Office.

We are sometimes asked if we organise regular self-help group meetings, but we do not do this formaliyaswefind itmoreacceptableforourarea Organisers to arrange Open Day meetings where you can meet us and other people, and view the Manufacturers display.

How we can help you

It is almost certain that early on you will be told of our existence ad will be given a copy of our booklet.

You will receive a high standard of professional care from Doctors, Hospital Nurses, and the Specialist Stoma Care Nurse during the tinme you are under medical care. We on our part have to be experts in living with a colostomy and that experience is available to you through personal contact with our national team of volunteers, and through our Phone and Letter Helpline services.

Our contact with you remains strictly private and confidential, and you weill be friend for life. That means that you can contact us at ant time with a problem no matter how big or small, or simply to obtain reassurance and information.

You are also invited to give us news of yourself, because ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things, and this serves as an incentive to others.

Be sure however, that we do not impose ourselves on you or intrude on your privacy.
