Advice on childhood bedwetting and day-time wetting
The Enuresis Resource and Information Centre (ERIC) is a national charity which provides advice and information to children, parents, young adults and professionals on the common and stressful condition of nocturnal enuresis or bedwetting. ERIC also offers advice on childhood day-time wetting. Established in 1988, It is the first organisation of its kind in the UK - indeed, the world.

This booklet gives details of literature and products available from ERIC. To order any of the products listed simply complete the order form at the back of this booklet and post to the Enuresis Resource and Information Centre, 34 Old School House, Britannia Road, Kingswood, Bristol, BS15 2DB. Alternatively, you can fax a copy of your order on 0117-960 0401.

The extent of the problem

The number of children who regularly wet the bed:
1 in 6 five year olds
1 in 14 seven year olds
1 in 20 ten year olds
1 in 50-1 00 fifteen year olds and older (including adults)
Source: Young, 1969,. Pierce, 1980.

Bedwetting affects over half a million children and day-time wetting affects over 125,000 children between the ages of 6-16 years in the UK. These difficulties are not easily discussed:-
"I sometimes get the feeling that I am the only person in the world suffering from it."
Eleven year old writing in to ERIC

The aims of ERIC

  • To reduce the stigma associated with bedwetting and day-time wetting
  • To increase public understanding of the problem and inform parents and young
  • adults of where they can go for professional help
  • To help professionals improve their assessment and treatment skills
  • To increase research into the causes and treatment of enuresis
  • To encourage mutual support

"It is only since I have been brave enough to admit that my children bedwet that other people have admitted to me that their children do too."
Mother writing in to ERIC

ERIC's advice service

A telephone helpline service for children, parents and professionals is available between 9.30-5.30, weekdays, on 0117-960 3060. ERIC also has details of enuresis clinics around the country.

Enuresis alarms

Alarms are generally used by children from the age of seven years. They are an extremely successful form of treatment, particularly if used with guidance from a health professional. Contact ERIC on 0117-960 3060 for detals of local clinics and other resources.

There are two types of enuresis alarms or "buzzers"

  • Bedside or "in-bed" alarm. This has a larger "noise box" which is placed beside the bed, and a sensor mat which is placed beneath the lower bedsheet
  • Mini or personally worn alarm. This has a small "noise box" which is pinned on to the pyjama top, and a sensor which can be placed between two pairs of pants or in a small pad.
  • In both types the noise box rings when urination begins, causing the child to wake up and to "hold on". Gradually the child learns to wake up and to "hold on" to the sensation of a full bladder without the alarm.
