LOOK - NATIONAL
FEDERATION OF FAMILIES WITH BLIND OR VISUALLY IMPAIRED CHILDRENIn Britain today, more than 20,000 families have a child with impaired
vision. For some, vision is their only problem but for many it is one of two or
more disabilities. Parents may feel extremely isolated and have to face a whole
range of new and difficult problems. LOOK brings together local groups of
families facing similar problems to share information and mutual support. These
local groups have an important role. They offer the following services. - Provide guidance on the real meaning behind the complex medical terms often
used by doctors to describe a child's eye condition.
- Advise parents on their and their child's entitlement to Social Security
and other benefits.
- Share information on toys and games suitable for visually impaired
children.
- Offer information on the local and national educational choices open to
visually impaired children.
- Explain what is meant by Statementing.
- Provide mutual support.
- Produce a quaterly newsletter.
The LOOK National Office offers the following services. - Provides information directly for parents and organisations concerned with
visually impaired children.
- Gives access to the latest ideas and developments in the education, care
and health of children with impaired vision.
- Monitors current medical and social research and public debate on the
issues of concern to families with visually impaired children.
- Co-operates with all medical, voluntary and statutory agencies concerned
with visual impairment.
