MACULAR DISEASE SOCIETY The Macular Disease Society is a voluntary organisation formed in 1987 by
and for sufferers from macular degeneration. MD is now the most common cause of
registrable blindness in the UK and results in loss of central vision,
including certain bands of colour vision. The Society offers a range of support and information services to those
newly diagnosed or otherwise concerned about the condition. Members are
encouraged to make contact with each other for mutual support and the sharing
of experience to build confidence and independence. There are nearly 70 local
self help groups throughout the British Isles which depend on the enthusiasm
and dedication of volunteer group leaders. The Society publishes a quarterly newsletter, Side View, both in
large print and on cassette tape. It also has available a booklet,Understanding macular degeneration, written by a member of its Council
who is a consultant eye surgeon. There is a series of fifteen information
leaflets on topics such as daily living skills, hand-held electronic readers
and low vision aids. The Society encourages and sponsors research into the disease and ways of
alleviating its effects. It operates its own eye donor scheme for specific
research into macular disease. Regular conferences are held with guest speakers
and exhibitions of equipment. Contact the above address or telephone number for further information about
membership or to speak to a volunteer who has macular disease.
