MAKE A WISH FOUNDATIONMake-A-Wish Foundation UK was formed in 1986 and has a very simple
objective. The Foundation's aim is to turn the wishes of children aged between
3 and 18 suffering from life-threatening illnesses, into reality. A wish
granted is true magic for the child and provides happy memories for the family
when, perhaps, time finally runs out. Whether the wish is to fly over New York in a helicopter, swim with
dolphins, be a policeman for a day, meet a favourite celebrity or visit a
famous Mouse in Disneyworld, its coming true can bring a little happiness into
lives that have been dominated by pain and trauma and can give the children the
will to keep fighting to get better when everything else seems so bleak. A network of regional volunteers, supported by a small team of professional
staff, work to ensure that wishes are fulfilled to the highest excellence.
Trained volunteers visit each child to find out their special wish. Once the
wish has been approved the organisation swings into action to ensure that it is
carried out with the utmost care to provide a memorable time for all concerned.
Over 500 very special wishes have been granted by Make-A-Wish since its
inception in 1986. Make-A-Wish Foundation UK is part of the largest wishgranting organisation
in the world which was originally formed in Phoenix Arizona in 1980. There are
now 20 affiliates throughout the world all liaising closely with each other
when a child wishes to visit their country.
