MINISTRY OF DEFENCE GULF VETERANS ILLNESSES UNIT

The Gulf Veterans Medical Assessment Programme (MAP) was established in July 1993 to examine UK Gulf veterans who were concerned that their health had been adversely affected by service in Operation GRANBY. The programme has two main purposes:

  • It aims to provide the patient with a diagnosis of his/her medical condition and to recommend appropriate treatment or further investigation, or to provide reassurance if no abnormalities are found.
  • Secondly, the MAP will collate statistical information which will be available as a resource for researchers and may be useful in helping to determine whether there are any particular patterns of ill health associated with service in the Gulf. No information on individuals will be provided to third parties without express written consent.

The MAP is open to all present and former servicemen or MOD civilians who served in the Gulf at any time between August 1990 and July 1991; or who believe that their ill health has suffered as a direct result of the Gulf conflict. The programme does not provide treatment but assesses patients and recommends treatment if appropriate. Those still serving in the Armed Forces should ask their Medical Officer for a referral to the MAP. Civilians or those having left the Forces should initially contact their GP.

A leaflet giving information on the programme is available from the above address. This includes details of medical examinations, tests and travel expenses to attend appointments at St Thomas Hospital.
