 | MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY GROUP |
There are several forms of muscular dystrophy and over 50 associated
neuromuscular conditions which fall under the umbrella of the Muscular
Dystrophy Campaign. They are largely characterised by a progressive wasting and
weakening of muscle tissue, leading to varying degrees of disability. Sometimes
mild symptoms only begin to show in adulthood; sometimes children are severely
affected from birth. The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign is the national registered charity funding
research into the causes of neuromuscular conditions and effective ways of
treating them. Researchers funded by the group have an international reputation
for their work. The group relies on voluntary donations to fund its work. Seven Muscle Centres operating within hospitals are directly funded by the
Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. There, families can benefit from genetic
counselling, diagnostic services, expert clinical care and on-going support
from a team of specialists. The group also provides a free information service
and a nation-wide team of Family Care Officers. Through the Joseph Patrick Memorial Trust, the organisation gives financial
assistance towards the purchase of essential equipment such as outdoor electric
wheelchairs for the estimated 20,000 people affected by muscular dystrophy or
an allied neuromuscular conditions.
