THE MYASTHENIA GRAVIS ASSOCIATION

The Myasthenia Gravis Association is a voluntary organisation with charitable status, whose funds are directed into three main areas: the support of research into the management and cure of the disease; the provision of a national support network; increasing public and medical awareness of Myasthenia Gravis.

Very importantly, the MGA supports vital research into MG. Results from the Oxford MG Research Centre, headed by Professor Newsom-Davis, are encouraging and new techniques promise rapid progress in the future.

Local support groups highlight MGA activities and help break down isolation by giving members and their families an opportunity to meet and share experiences in a friendly and caring atmosphere.

A comprehensive information service operates at the office in Derby, while our regional care co-ordinators are available to meet and advise patients and professionals.

In addition, the newsletter, national conferences and regional meetings provide information and encouragement to all those coping with MG.

How to get help

If MG is suspected, correct diagnosis is possible through an awareness of the disease, simple tests with drugs, and further definitions through use of electrical and immunological testing. Invariably a GP will refer patients to a consultant neurologist for these tests.

If diagnosis has been confirmed, contact the MGA (see below). Ask for our free information pack and we will put you in touch with one of our regional care co-ordinators or your local group or representative.

How to give help

We are rightly proud of the fact that our services are carried out almost entirely by volunteers, but research costs money so we do need support both financially and physically.

Corporate bodies can help with support in cash or in kind, by lending services, or by sponsorship. As an individual you can help by joining the association, by giving a donation or by organising a fund-raising event.
