Osteoporosis can be treated and prevented in most people. Established in
1986, the National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) is the only national charity
dedicated to eradicating osteoporosis and promoting bone health. The NOS is campaigning to provide information to the public on all aspects
of the disease and encourage people of all ages to take action to protect their
bones from osteoporosis or prevent further bone loss. The NOS offers support to people with osteoporosis and everyone at risk of
the disease through: - a network of 100 support groups across the UK
- a membership of 25,000
- information and easy to read publications on all aspects of osteoporosis
- a confidential telephone helpline staffed by specialist osteoporosis
nurses
- a free postal information service on all aspects of osteoporosis,
menopause, HRT and related health issues
- education campaigns for the public and health professionals, including
literature for schools and for nurses
- funding research into causes and treatments for osteoporosis
- liaising with the government and Health Authorities to improve osteoporosis
services and offering an advice service for health districts and hospitals
wishing to establish osteoporosis strategies
- promoting awareness of osteoporosis through media campaigns and offering
information services to press, radio and TV journalists
