 | NATIONAL CENTRE FOR EATING DISORDERS |
The National Centre for Eating Disorders is an independent treatment
facility based in Esher, Surrey with a network of in-house trained counsellors
in a number of regions throughout the UK. They receive referrals from local GPs
and from Health Authorities throughout the South East region. The NCFED is
committed to preventing where possible the growth of eating disorders among
adolescents, the highest risk group for anorexia/bulimia. The NCFED aims
include the following. - To give one-to-one treatment and support, information and sound therapy to
all persons who feel they are "at war" with food, or with a
subjective sense of having an abnormal relationship with food. (The centre
would define such people as suffering from binge eating disorder, bulimia
nervosa, non-acute anorexia (ie not in urgent need of medical treatment), or
body image disturbances.)
- To help people with atypical bulimia and phobic reactions around food or
eating situations.
- To offer telephone counselling to those unable to have access to a local
specialist.
- To provide an information service: Information packs are available on
request on receipt of small donation - for students and health professionals.
- To provide training : a complete training course in counselling skills for
eating disorders.
- To provide support and guidance to the families and peers of people with
eating problems and direct them to appropriate sources of support.
