 | NATIONAL DEAF CHILDREN'S SOCIETY |
The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) is an organisation of families,
parents and carers which exists to enable deaf children and young people to
make the most of their skills and abilities. One of the main aims of the
Society is to provide clear, balanced support and information to parents and
carers as near to their homes as possible which is achieved with the aid of a
network of regional staff and trained local representatives. The NDCS provides information and advice on all aspects of childhood
deafness including education, benefits, audiology, technology and equipment.
Support is also provided at Disability Appeal Tribunals and Special Educational
Needs Tribunals. A range of leaflets is produced which includes a Family
Information Pack for families whose child has been diagnosed as deaf (also
produced in community languages) and the TALK magazine (which
incorporates the Technology Bulletin). The NDCS also campaigns for improvements in health, education, state
benefits and other services, liaising with central and local government, health
authorities, education professionals, social services, manufacturers and other
voluntary organisations in the process. The Society also provides training and
consultancy to families and professionals. Since its launch in 1944 the Society has grown to an organisation of over
9000 members with over 100 local groups. Contact the above number for details
of these local groups.
