 | NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE EDUCATION OF SICK CHILDREN |
The National Association for the Education of Sick Children (NAESC) was set
up in 1993 to ensure that all children and young people get the education they
need when they are sick. By 'sick children', those with severe and chronic
conditions which interrupt education are meant, rather than those with short
routine admissions to hospital and normal childhood illnesses. The education
these children need includes the following. - Hospital teaching.
- Home tuition.
- Help reintegrating into school successfully.
- Help to make up any deficit at 16 to launch them into independence and
working life.
Over 100,000 children a year are affected in England & Wales alone
(NAESC research. 1996). The NAESC is a national organisation, working with
LEAs, hospital trusts, teachers and parents of sick children to encourage best
practice in the education of these children. Publications are available including 'Directory: Education for Sick
Children' which includes the following features. - A unique national resource.
- Individual entries for every local education authority- includes all the
new unit local authorities.
- Annually updateable format.
- The statutory context: Who is responsible for what described by the
Department of Education & Employment, the Scottish Office, the Welsh
Office, and the Department for Education in Northern Ireland.
- Good Practice Examples: job descriptions; sample documents;
evaluation.
- Contact details for every hospital teaching unit.
- How home tuition is arranged and who to contact in each local
authority.
- Special Supplement with details of specialist psychiatric units.
