NATIONAL FETAL ANTI CONVULSANT SYNDROME ASSOCIATIONFetal Anti Convulsant Syndrome is caused by the effects of anti-convulsant
drugs taken during pregnancy. Of all children born to epileptic mothers who are
on anti-convulsant therapy, around 1 in 10 will be affected to varying degrees.
Children show a wide range of symptoms ranging from minor anomalies to major
congenital abnormalities. FACS was formed by a mother with a child affected by
the syndrome and is affiliated to Contact a Family. The Association has a
medical adviser. The main aims of the group are as follows: - To provide support for affected families.
- To increase awareness of the syndrome.
- To put families in touch with other families in their area for mutual
support.
- To encourage them in their quest for a firm diagnosis.
- To ensure that future mothers are made aware of the risks and the steps
that can be taken to minimise these risks.
