NATIONAL ME CENTREThe National ME Centre and Centre for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome offers a
programme of medication and therapy to sufferers. The centre is staffed by
volunteers some of whom are trained as support workers to assist the medical
professionals. The NMEC is a charity which is currently planning to create a
purpose-built centre to house the services based at Harold Wood Hospital.
Patients can be referred to the centre by their GP for treatment. Full details
of the referral procedure are included in an information pack and application
form available from the centre. The centre also offers the following to those
who contact the centre. - Telephone advice to callers from all over the country.
- It determines if there is a source of help local to the caller.
- It asks if the caller has a diagnosis and if their GP or consultant would
be willing to refer them.
- GPs can be offered information packs, videos and telephone information.
- Each GP's referral letter is seen by consultants and a decision taken about
the most appropriate place for the patient to be seen - either at the Centre or
the NHS Clinic at the hospital.
- Initial advice and information from support workers.
