PAIN CONCERN (UK)

Pain Concern (UK) is a registered charity (number 801934). It is a member of The Long Term Medical Conditions Alliance. It has both professional and non-professional members, and is becoming increasingly concerned with campaigning for the recognition of the needs of non-terminal chronic pain sufferers. It wishes to see overall acceptance of chronic pain as a disability.

Membership is open to all, and is currently £5 per annum. All members are sent four newsletters a year. Lists of local members are available on application (members details are held on disk and may be withheld from general circulation on request).

An extensive factsheet is available free to all members. Non-members may receive this by sending a cheque or postal order for £1 payable to Pain Concern (UK) at the address below.

Information line

Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday (bank holidays excepted), a specially trained nurse is available to give helpful advice and information on all aspects of chronic pain. Whilst this nurse cannot diagnose an individual problem, helpful information is available about services within the NHS and private sector. Advice can also be given about complementary therapies which may be of help in controlling chronic pain.

The nurse will have personal experience of chronic pain and has been specially trained to offer advice on self help. She/he can give information on medicines and diet, as well as helping to prepare for a consultation with your doctor by listing your questions and helping you prepare a history of your problems.

The listening ear helpline

At times and numbers stated on the information helpline, a volunteer is available to offer sympathy, support, and empathy. No medical or nursing advice is available from these volunteers, but the opportunity to speak with a non-professional pain sufferer may be helpful. If it becomes clear from this contact that you need to speak with the nurse, you will be given details of the times to ring for this specialist help.
