 | SARGEANT CANCER CARE FOR CHILDREN |
Sargent Cancer Care for Children is a registered charity and the only
national organisation supporting young people with cancer and their families
from the moment of diagnosis. 46 Sargent workers, based at major cancer centres
throughout the UK, provide high quality counselling and practical help. The
charity also offers financial grants to help care for children with cancer.
- Nearly 2,000 under 21's are diagnosed with cancer, leukaemia or Hodgkin's disease in the UK each year.
- Sargent Cancer Care for Children is the only charity offering UK-wide psychological and financial support to young people with cancer and their families. Over 28,000 children have been helped since the charity was founded in 1968.
- Last year Sargent raised £6.7 million for its vital work. The target is to raise £10 million each year so that the charity can help everyone under 21 who is diagnosed with cancer, leukaemia or Hodgkin's disease.
- Sargent funds over 90 Sargent Care Professionals at major cancer treatment centres. They support each child and their family throughout treatment, rehabilitation or bereavement.
- Sargent Care Teams are based at over 30 major cancer treatment centres throughout the UK. The team members are highly skilled, professionally qualified specialist social workers. Sargent Care Professionals operate as an integral part of the hospital teams alongside the consultants and nurses.
- Sargent offers financial support to families in need for things like special equipment, extra clothing, accommodation and travelling costs while their child is ill. The charity aims to pay out grants within 24hrs, once a particular need has been identified by the care teams.
- Sargent provides respite breaks for parents and children. Treatment for cancer is usually in phases and the intensity decided by what each child can withstand. Between phases children need to recover so short breaks are a very necessary part of therapy.
- Sargent has a home in Prestwick, Scotland where families can take short breaks. A second centre, focusing on young people aged 13-21 with cancer, has opened in Bexley, South London.
(The charity was formerly known as the Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for
Children.)
