SCOTTISH SPINA BIFIDA ASSOCIATION

The Scottish Spina Bifida Association seeks to increase public awareness and understanding of individuals with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus and allied disorders. It aims to secure provision for their special needs and those of their families. Support to individuals and families is the basis of all their services which are as follows:

  • Family support service (see below) and local branch network.
  • Respite and home support.
  • Multi-sports activities.
  • Training for independent living.
  • Fundraising opportunities.
  • Volunteer training and information and support to professionals.

Details of the Family Support Service are as follows.

  • Providing advice and information to help people attain their full potential.
  • The SSBA Family Support Service aims to respond to the needs of members and to keep them informed of new services and benefits which may improve their daily living.
  • A Lo-call Helpline is available for direct contact with Family Support Workers.
  • Trouble-shooting and problem solving on behalf of members are part of the day-to-day work of the SSBA.
  • Organising respite care breaks and activities enables members to interact with their peer group.
  • Practical skills are promoted during Independent Living training weekends.

The society distributes several booklets and leaflets for a small cost. Booklet titles include: The Baby with Spina Bifida, Keeping Fit, Spina Bifida and You, The Handwriting of Spina Bifida Children, Standard Information Pack. Leaflet titles include: Medical Aspects, Orthopaedic Aspects, Points for Parents, Scoliosis, Incontinence, Pregnancy, Folic Acid and You. Publications include: Children with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus at School, The Learner Driver with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus, Sex and Spina Bifida, Young People with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus - Learning and Development.
