TOURETTE SYNDROME ASSOCIATIONThe Tourette Syndrome Association (TSA) is the only national voluntary
non-profit membership organisation dedicated to identifying the cause, finding
the cure, and controlling the effects of TS. It is a registered charity (number
1003317). Members include individuals with the disorder, their relatives, and other
interested, concerned people. The association, founded in 1972, develops and
disseminates educational material to individuals, professionals, and to
agencies in the fields of health care, education and government. It
co-ordinates support groups and other services to help people and their
families cope with the problems that occur with TS. It funds research to
ultimately find the cause of and cure for TS and, at the same time, lead to
improved medications and treatments. The TSA also: - offers direct help to TS families in crisis situations
- organises workshops and symposiums for scientists, clinicians, and others
working in the field of TS
- maintains a data base of those diagnosed with TS
- sponsors the Tourette Syndrome Brain Bank Programme, involving collection
of sorely needed tissue for research
- increases the knowledge and sensitivity of health care professionals to
TS, through exhibits and conferences, the dissemination of literature, and the
organisation of national meetings
- develops and maintains lists of doctors who can diagnose and treat TS
Membership of TSA gives the opportunity to: - join other patients and families at meetings to discuss common problems
and offer mutual support
- help effect the early identification and treatment of TS
- obtain, via the TSA newsletter, the latest information on treatment,
research programmes, and scientific discoveries
- obtain films, videotapes, and publications at reduced rates
- become eligible for discounted registration fees at TSA national
conferences
The association has an extensive list of publications that discuss in detail
many of the topics touched upon in this article. Contact the TSA for a free
copy of their catalogue of publications and films.
