TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROME INFORMATION SERVICEToxic Shock Syndrome is a type of blood poisoning. It is rare but
potentially serious and can develop quickly in anyone - men, women and
children. There are around 40 cases per year in the UK of which 2-3 prove
fatal. Half the reported cases of TSS are associated with women using tampons.
It can be successfully treated with early diagnosis. The Toxic Shock Syndrome Information Service (TSSIS) provides information
about toxic shock syndrome (TSS) for members of the public, the media and
medical professionals. Services provided by the TSSIS include the following. - 24 hour pre-recorded telephone advice line.
- Educational programme to assist doctors in the diagnosis of TSS.
- Publications that include: TSS: Know the Facts, TSS - A Health
Professionals Guide, Uncommon Febrile Illness: One in a Million, and an
educational video.
