Xanthelasmas: yellowish, fatty deposits in the eyelids.
Xanthoma: fatty skin tumour.
Xanthopsia: yellow vision.
Xerophthalmia: dry eyes.
Xerostomia: dry mouth
X-linked: a form of inheritance where thegene lies on the Xchromosome. X-linked genes can be dominant but are usually recessive. Girls who carry an altered gene are usually not affected since they have a second normal copy of the gene but they can pass the affected gene on in 50 per cent of their pregnancies. Boys who have only one X chromosome do not have a second normal copy of the gene so they will be affected by the disorder. They will pass on the altered gene to all of their daughters who will be carriers but to none of their sons.
X-ray: an image of a part of the body, created by sending X-rays through the body to partially expose a photographic negative.
Zenker's Diverticulum: pouches in the oesophagus caused by increased pressure.
Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: a group of symptoms that occur when atumour forms in the pancreas causing large amounts of the hormone gastrin to be released which in turn causes too much acid in the duodenum, resulting in ulcers, bleeding, and perforation.
Zygote: an egg which has been fertilized by a sperm but has not yet begun cell division.
