EXERCISE GUIDELINES

Your own doctor will be able to recommend an appropriate exercise programme for you, but the following are general guidelines:

  • The amount of exercise you do depends on the severity of your coronary artery disease.
  • What exercise you do must be tailored to you as an individual.
  • Be sensible about exercise. If your heart asks you to rest, take a rest. Do not try to carry on or ignore chest pain.
  • Always have your nitrate tablets or spray with you in case you have an angina attack.
  • Try to avoid the cold or high winds when you take exercise.

What kind of exercises should I do?

First, talk to your own doctor as he or she is in the best position to advise you. In general:

  • Work at your own pace. You must always remember that angina is not a pain to 'work through', it is an alarm to tell you to stop and rest.
  • Exercise should be continuous and steady. Walking is recommended, not jogging.

ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING ANY EXERCISE PROGRAMME
