INFECTIOUS DISEASES (UNITED KINGDOM)

Disease: Bacillary dysentery

Incubation period (days): 1-7
Period of Communicability: whilst organism present in stools
Minimal Period of Exclusion
Cases (subject to Clinical Recovery): until clinically fit;until neccesary bacteriology examination is clear and only on advice of PHCD* or specialist in Community Medicine (Child Health)
Contacts: when siblings attending play groups day nurseries and schools should be excluded until bacteriological examination is clear

Disease: Chicken Pox

Incubation period (days): 14-21
Period of Communicability: Until the lesions are dry and scabbed. Usually 3-10 days in chickenpox and longer in shingles
Minimal Period of Exclusion
Cases (subject to Clinical Recovery): 6 days from the onset of rash
Contacts: None

Disease: Diptheria

Incubation period (days): 2-5
Period of Communicability: Whilst the organism is present in the nose or throat
Minimal Period of Exclusion
Cases (subject to Clinical Recovery): until bacteriological examination is clear
Contacts: until bacteriological examination is clear

Disease: Food Poisoning (including salmonellosis)

Incubation period (days): 18-36 hours
Period of Communicability: Whilst organism is present in stool
Minimal Period of Exclusion
Cases (subject to Clinical Recovery): Until clinically fit and when neccessary, bacteriological examination is clear
Contacts: None

Disease: German Measles

Incubation period (days): 14-21
Period of Communicability: From a few days before up to 14 days after onset
Minimal Period of Exclusion
Cases (subject to Clinical Recovery): The disease is so mild in children that exclusion is of doubtful value
Contacts: None

Disease: Hepatitis A (jaundice)

Incubation period (days): 15-50
Period of Communicability: from 7-14 days before to 7 days after onset
Minimal Period of Exclusion
Cases (subject to Clinical Recovery): 7 days from onset of jaundice
Contacts: None

Disease: Measles

Incubation period (days): 8-15
Period of Communicability: Until the catarrhal phase of the illness is over, usually 7 days after the onset of the rash

Disease: Meningoccocal Infection (inc. Meningitis)

Period of Communicability: Whilst organism is present in nasopharynx

Contacts: None, but family or dormitory contacts may need chemoprophylaxis consult MOEH

Disease: Mumps

Incubation period (days): 18-21
Period of Communicability: From 7 days before onset of symptoms to subsidence of swelling
Minimal Period of Exclusion
Cases (subject to Clinical Recovery): Until swelling has subsided (7days minimum)

Disease: Poliomyelitis

Incubation period (days): 3-21
Period of Communicability: Whilst virus is present in stools
Minimal Period of Exclusion
Cases (subject to Clinical Recovery): At the discretion of PCHD*
Contacts: At the discretion of PHCD*

Disease: Streptococcal (including Scarlet fever,Tonsillitis)

Incubation period (days): 2-5
Period of Communicability: Whilst organism is present in nasophaarynx

Cases (subject to Clinical Recovery): Until clinical recovery

Disease: Tuberculosis (Primary)

Incubation period (days): 4-6 weeks

Cases (subject to Clinical Recovery): Until declared to be non-infectious and on advice of PHCD*

Disease: Typhoid and Paratyphoid Fever

Incubation period (days): 7-21
Period of Communicability: Whilst organism is present in stools or urine
Minimal Period of Exclusion
Cases (subject to Clinical Recovery): Until bacteriological examination is clear and on advice of PHCD*
Contacts: None except for home contacts

Disease: Whooping Cough (pertussis)

Incubation period (days): 7-10
Period of Communicability: From 7 days after exposure to 21 days after onset of paroxysmal cough
Minimal Period of Exclusion
Cases (subject to Clinical Recovery): 21 days from onset of paroxysmal cough
Contacts: None

Minimal period of exclusion

Impetigo : Exclude until adequate treatment instituted and lesion covered
Pediculosis/Lice : Exclude until adequate treatment has been given
Verrucae plantaaris (plantar Warts) : Exclusion from swimming or barefoot activities unneccessary. treatment only indicated if the warts are painful
Tinea Capitis (Ringworm of the scalp) : Exclude until adequate treatment instituted and clearance given by Specialist Community Medicine (Child Health)
Tinea Corporis (Ringworm of the Body) : Exclusion not normally necessary during treatment unless evidence of epidemic
Ringworm of the Feet (Athlete's foot) : Exclusion from swimming or barefoot activities unless severe, but treatment advisable
Scabies : Exclude until adequate treatment received. This usually takes 2 days

*PHCD=PRINCIPAL COMMUNITY HEALTH DOCTOR
