VAGINAL DRYNESS ASSOCIATED
WITH THE MENOPAUSE
What is the menopause?
In the middle years of a woman's life the menstrual cycle occurs less
regularly and finally stops altogether. This is because the ovaries cease
functioning and oestrogen, the female hormone, is no longer produced. The last
menstrual period marks the menopause.
What are the most common symptoms?
The most common symptom is hot flushes. Night sweats, insomnia, irritability
and vaginal dryness (atrophic vaginitis) are also frequently experienced.
What is atrophic vaginitis?
Atrophic vaginitis is a drying of the vagina, which may lead to irritation,
soreness, recurrent infections and painful intercourse (dyspareunia).
How will it affect my sex life?
Pain on intercourse is likely to result in a decrease in sexual drive and
desire. In turn, this may lead to misunderstanding and tension between couples.
Is this effect on sexual function common?
Yes. Over 30% of postmenopausal women suffer from vaginal dryness and
painful intercourse to some degree.
Is there any treatment for atrophic vaginitis?
Yes. Your doctor can prescribe a course of locally applied vaginal oestrogen
therapy which treats the vaginal symptoms of the menopause. If you suffer from
a number of menopausal symptoms your doctor may decide that you need an
alternative therapy.
Will there be any side effects?
Vaginal oestrogen therapy is available at an extremely low dose and so side
effects, such as vaginal bleeding, are rare.
Where can I go for further advice?
Your doctor is the best person to discuss any symptoms you may have. You may
need a routine examination before being given a prescription.
